Get Set, Write! Training Middle and High School Students to Become Excellent Writers
The crucial importance of good writing skills is discussed as well as various reasons why young people today cannot write. The methodology of English grammar is placed in its proper context, which is to enable young people to become good communicators— to write, speak, and read effectively. The speaker addresses ways to help students overcome their fears about writing and to motivate them to improve. Special areas of writing are discussed—basic writing rules, criteria for expository essay writing, ways to achieve a mature style. The speaker discusses many different writing assignments such as journaling, paraphrase, summary, writing about pictures, adding different endings, writing from different perspectives, book reports, and movie reviews. She suggests ways to effectively evaluate student writing. A detailed list of writing contests is included in the seminar.
